Top Freezer Refrigerators - Kitchen Equipment

Which make and model of 2008 Top-Freezer Refrigerators and Upright Freezers are recommended by Consumer Report

I've put up vegetables from the garden and now my freezer is needing to be replaced. My refrigerator is also needing a lot of repair. I've been told Consumer Report has listed the best Upright freezers and top-freezer refrigerators. If you subscribe to Consumer Report, could you tell me the make and model of the best 2008 Upright freezer and Top-freezer refrigerator. Thank you

In the August 2008 issue here are the top-freezer refrigerators listed in order of score (there are only three top-freezer):
GE Profile PTS22LHR at $1,350
Frigidaire FRT18S6A at $550
Kenmore 7419 at $530
"The GE offers stainless steel, a water dispenser, more usable space and less noise for its higher price. Both of the narrower, lower-priced models offer lots of performance for the dollar. Between the two, consider the Kenmore for its added fridge and freezer space if you can fit its slightly larger dimension."
In the magazine ratings there are 7 bottom-freezers, 4 side-by-side and 3 built-ins. This issue does not rate upright freezers (or any for that matter).
Hope this helps.

Consumer Reports: Energy Stars Misleading On Refrigerators

MADISON, Wis. -- There are ongoing problems with the Energy Star program when it comes to refrigerators, according to Consumer Reports' tests.

Energy guide labels on appliances indicate how much electricity the appliance uses, based on tests required by the government. Machines that do well qualify for an energy star, but Consumer Reports found the star rating isn't always reliable.

"In our tests, refrigerators typically use about 20 percent more energy than it says on their yellow energy guide label. That's because our tests are tougher, and we believe they better reflect how you'd actually use a refrigerator," said Celia Kuperszmid-Lehrman, of Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports' tests have found some French-door refrigerators are off by far more. A G.E. refrigerator made by Samsung used almost 40 percent more electricity than the number on its guide suggests. Consumer Reports also found an LG and a Sears' Kenmore made by LG used about 50 percent more energy.

Warm your insides

According to weather.com, the low for Saturday for the Shoals is predicted at 18 degrees.

So, pile on the blankets and stoke the fire.

While you're warming the outside of your body, take a moment to warm the inside, too.

In a cooking class, Soups and Stocks Made Easy, Sherry Campbell, director of the Shoals Culinary Center in Florence, said the best soups start with a homemade broth.

Her menu included English Onion Soup with Sage and Cheddar Soup, Sweet Potato and Apple Bisque and Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup.

"While making the chicken noodle soup," Campbell told attendees, "I'm making broth for all three soups."

But if you're not making broth for a number of soups in one night, Campbell said you can freeze the broth.

Campbell said cooled broth could be stored in 1- or 2-quart zipper-style plastic bags.

"Just lay the sealed bags of broth on a tray, then freeze," she said. "Once frozen, you can take the bags off the tray and store in the freezer. I always double bag my broths."

Freezer won't thaw and drain - Appliance Repair Forum

I have a top freezer. Recently, I noticed water dripping from the air tower onto the top shelf of my refrigerator. After close inspection, I noticed there was a lot of ice built up around air tower in the freezer. I let the ice thaw and then removed the evaporator cover. I then saw that the entire bottom of the drain pan was all iced up. The ice was blocking the hole at the bottom of the drain pan (that allows water to be drained into the tray-evap). When all that ice melted, I heard water draining into the tray-evap at the bottom of the refrigerator. I also poured water down the drain pipe and it went straight down. So I know the drain pipe isn't plugged or clogged.

Top Freezer Refrigerators for Unlimited Space

The refrigerator is one of those miracles of modern living that has totally changed life. Prior to refrigeration, the only way to preserve food like meat was to salt it, and iced beverages in the summer were a real luxury.

Most homes today have some type of refrigerator or the other, to keep food and beverages chilled and fresh. Over the years, refrigerators have evolved from a basic chilled box with some simple shelves to today’s much more sophisticated and feature-rich models. The basic idea behind a refrigerator is very simple: It uses the evaporation of a liquid to absorb heat. While it is still possible to purchase an economical refrigerator with limited interior features, most manufacturers are creating upscale fridges with as many advanced features as they can include. These can range from upgraded exterior finishes to flexible shelving and new twists on interior storage features.

Consumers today want attractive looking refrigerators, flexible food storage options and a choice of refrigerator configuration (side-by-side, top freezer, bottom freezer or counter depth). Due to rising energy costs, consumers are also looking to purchase energy-efficient refrigerators that will help them keep their monthly electricity bill under control.

Top-freezer Refrigerators make good use of space and perform well temperature-wise. They are also less expensive than other types and, in general, are more reliable than other styles. Most models available today are Energy Star rated that can help you earn you a rebate from your utility company. They feature an interior ice maker, spill-control glass shelves and gallon storage on the door. Available in a myriad of colors, some high end units also have an internal water dispenser.

Top-freezer refrigerators tend to offer smaller freezer compartments than side-by-side models. They have the freezer at eye level, thus placing the refrigerator at a lower and less convenient place. These Fridge Freezer models are less expensive than side-by-side refrigerators. Another benefit of the top-freezer models is that they can hold very large horizontal items like pizza boxes and birthday cakes while the fridge compartment in a side-by-side unit might be too narrow.
