He had several outdoor hockey rinks within walking distance of his house, and he would play for 8-10 hours some days. Fortunately, there were indoor heated areas near the playing surface where players could warm up. Often, Palmer's mother would bring pizza out to Jarod at the rink.
"I miss those days," Palmer said. "I definitely developed a lot of skills on the outdoor ice."
His father, Jeff, was a defenseman growing up, and he taught Jarod some of the defensive and offensive skills he still hones today. However, an experiment with Jarod playing defense did not work out well.
"I kept disappearing and ending up on the wrong end of the ice," Palmer said.
