The Nifty 50 | James Freeman, Coffee Maker

James Freeman founded Blue Bottle, named after a Viennese cafe from the 1600s, out of obsession. A classical clarinetist, he didn’t think it odd that he bought green (fresh) beans and roasted them on a cookie sheet in his oven. Nor did he think it strange that when he traveled with orchestras in the 1990s, he would pack his own grinder and French press, going so far as to ask flight attendants to pour hot water into his press on morning flights. “Now it does seem ridiculous and controlling,” he admitted.

In 2002, he started selling his beans at farmers’ markets. Soon he was asked to park his new espresso cart outside the San Francisco Ferry Building, where lines gathered early for carefully made cappuccinos and drip coffee. Chez Panisse chose Blue Bottle for its house blend. A few years later, he opened a kiosk in an alley in Hayes Valley, followed by an actual walls-and-windows cafe on Mint Street, which drew crowds with its $20,000 Japanese siphon machine .

This year was particularly hectic, with a new cafe in the Ferry Building (the cart’s still out there on weekends); a cafe at SF MoMA, where his wife, Caitlin Williams Freeman, formerly of Miette bakery, makes pastries inspired by the collection; and a new roastery and cafe in Oakland. In keeping with his aesthetic and coffee geek-outs (just read the “Preparation” page on his Web site), Freeman worked with Heath Ceramics to make his ideal espresso cup for the SF MoMA space.

School unearths time capsule for 20th anniversary

What does a a coffee maker, microwave oven and condensed disc player have in common? They were all items that were chosen by teachers at Cypress Trails Easy School two decades ago as the most modern gadgets at the time.

Those answers were sealed stomach a time capsule that was opened up last week during Cypress Trails' 20th anniversary merrymaking.

Former Principal Elizabeth Taylor was at the ceremony and shared her memories of when the coach was built. For about six months before the building was complete the entire sect operated out of 29 portables that were housed at H.L. Johnson Basic School in Royal Palm Beach.

"We built something to last. There's a sign on the dotted line that's near the bus turnaround that says Cypress Trials. That lifeless sign was at H.L. Johnson and it was the only sign that distinguished us from their campus," she said. "That colophon is the one lasting piece of the old Cypress Trails and I see that's its still there. We're meant to last."

Former evaluator Elizabeth Cifelli, 26, of Palm Beach Gardens also attended the motions.

Bosch TKA 2830 UC 900-Watt 12-Cup Coffeemaker, White | Single Cup ...

For those who are intimidated by complex home electronics, Bosch's basic 900-watt coffeemaker brews up to 12 cups of java and requires no programming besides flipping the power switch on. The unit has special brewing and aroma systems that bring out excellent flavor in coffee. Ground coffee goes in the nondrip insert filter, which takes No. 4 paper filters and removes easily for rinsing by hand or running through the dishwasher. A water-level indicator is visible from both sides of the coffeemaker for monitoring the number of cups that are brewing. Coffee brews through the closed lid of the included glass carafe without spilling, for more convenient serving. Removing the carafe during brewing activates the brewing pause feature, which prevents coffee from dripping until the carafe is back on its plate. The machine automatically shuts off after brewing for safety, and the thermal carafe keeps coffee warm. This compact unit stands 12-1/2 inches high, measures 7-1/2 inches wide, and is 9-3/4 inches deep, plus it features a cord rewind space on the back for storage. Bosch covers this model with a one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde Over the last 8 years, I've purchased at least 5 coffee automatic drip coffee pots for my mom and for me. They have ranged from cheap to expensive. Expensive for me is in the $80 to $100 range. The last coffee pot I bought for my mom was a Melitta with the auto time set. While she loved the unit, it went to the coffee pot graveyard in just a little over a year when the heating unit burned out. A couple of my previous purchases were thermos-style units. My biggest complaints over all the coffee pots were (1) coffee not hot enough, (2) coffee didn't really taste that great, (3) pot not big enough, which happens most on thermos units, and (4) failure of the unit in too short a time, particularly for the more expensive units.

This time I decided to go for simple design, a larger container (12 cups instead of 10), a mid-range on...
