Paul DiMeo knows a thing or two about renovating homes and the endless honey-do list.
The carpenter, who appears on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition , says making a house into a home can be accomplished at any price point. He will share his budget-savvy tips on home renovations and discuss behind-the-scenes information from the TV show tomorrow at the 29th annual Philadelphia Home Show at the Convention Center.
DiMeo, born and raised in Media, is the show's kids' room specialist. In a phone interview, he said home projects should be a family affair. After all, at age 5 he learned carpentry from his father when his family home burned down and friends and family rebuilt it after the contractor went on strike.
We asked, what can we do in times like these when money is tight?
Take a kids' room: "Instead of buying a print for their room, take your child's art and manipulate it on iphoto and frame it. Do something that means something to you and them."
Kermit the Frog may have lamented being immature, but Roseville residents have the help of the Utility Exploration Center to approve being environmentally friendly a little easier.
Entering its third year, the Leafy Living Workshop series hosted by Roseville’s Utility Enquiry Center are hands-on, interactive guides for residents to agree sustainable living.
Developed by Utility Exploration Center administrator Bob Garrison, the weekend courses run the gamut of sustainable living from lighting protection in the home to efficient irrigation and gardening tips.
The center has been working with Sims Recycling Solutions to get ready for an electronic waste collection that will benefit the IDEAscape, an outdoor size of the Utility Exploration Center set to begin construction next year.
Earlier this month several families gathered at the center to produce bluebird nests under Garrison’s direction.
Participants tempered to recycled lumber to build an enclosed nesting blot for bluebirds that are losing their habitat to construction and building.
DEFINITION OF A GAZEBO – There is no standard definition of gazebos because there are so many different types of structures that are called gazebos. Sometimes gazebos are called summer houses, screen houses, pavilions, band stands, pergolas, pagodas, grottos and even rain shelters. When we go to town squares in small towns across America and see band stands these are also called gazebos. A gazebo can be made out of wood or stone but the most common for our backyards are ones made out of wood. Usually a wooden gazebo is a free standing structure.
TYPES OF WOODEN GAZEBOS – There are many types but the most common forms of gazebos are round, square, octagonal, and rectangle. If you are going to build your own wooden gazebo you will need a good set of proven plans to get the job done. It would be way too difficult to build an octagonal gazebo without good plans showing you all of the angles and cuts you would need to make to construct a wooden octagonal gazebo.
BUILD A WOODEN GAZEBO OR BUY A KIT – Most homeowners opt for purchasing a wooden gazebo in kit form. This is because most homeowners like the appearance and details that can be found in the wooden gazebos that come in kit form and feel they do not have the expertise to build their own wooden gazebo. Therefore, you do see a lot of wooden gazebos in kit form these days that can be purchased online.
USES FOR WOODEN GAZEBOS – A square or rectangle wooden gazebo can be used as a cover for a spa. The gazebo will keep the spa from collecting leaves and other flying debris and the gazebo will allow for use of the spa in more inclement weather. A wooden gazebo can also be used as a sun room. Many wooden gazebos in kit form now come with windows which give them a great look. The wooden gazebo can also be used for outdoor dining and entertaining. If screened on the sides outdoor dining can be a real pleasure in a gazebo. Personally, I like to use a gazebo as a place for morning coffee and meditation.
...What factors should those planning an outdoor kitchen keep in mind?
Outdoor living is moving to the next level! An outdoor kitchen is just one piece of many activities that take place outdoors. When planning an outdoor kitchen, here’s what you need to consider:
Outdoor kitchen size – Are you looking forward to entertaining large groups or cooking quiet, intimate dinners? Something in between? Visualize how you will use an outdoor kitchen…the frequency of use, the conveniences required, and the type of cooking (ambitious or simple) you’d like to plan for. Will others cook along with you or will one or two be responsible for outdoor cooking? Do you need separate cooking stations for prep or meal stages? Now’s the time to dream, imagine, and visualize the flow you’d love to have in your outdoor kitchen.
Location – Consider the lay of the land. Can an existing deck be used? A terraced section? A gazebo to house a separate kitchen? Is the topography of the land level? How close to the house would you like the outdoor kitchen (watch out for heat/smoke/noise issues if an outdoor kitchen is desired to be just outside the house.) What other outdoor activities will impact on the location of the kitchen? Make a list of expected activities (including lounging) to be sure an important activity (Bocce ball anyone?) is not forgotten.
Another factor in outdoor kitchen design is the weather. The weather will play a role in the wear of outdoor kitchen surfaces and your own desire to brave the elements while cooking up a storm!
Style – Of course, this is the fun part! What is the style of your house? Of your gardens, your outdoor living space? Outdoor kitchens can be designed in any way: modern, traditional, rustic or eclectic. All elements of your outdoor room builds on one another, even as one walks into and out of the house. Be style-conscious!
