Can a mandolin food slicer be used on cheddar cheese and summer sausage or salami to make paper thin slices?

I make a lot of appetizer trays and would like to know if the Oxo good grips mandolin would make paper thin slices of cheese and deli meats such as salami and summer and beef sausage that come in rolls. If there is another suggestion, I would appreciate any ideas.

A mandoline will work just fine for any of the meats you're using. The summer and beef sausages may have to be cut a little bit thicker, just so they don't fall apart.

As for the cheese: it's next to impossible to get paper-thin slices of cheese, no matter what you do. You could cut it manually (with a very sharp knife), but of course that will take quite a bit of time. It will help a great deal if you make sure the cheese is well-chilled---even slightly frozen---before you start cutting.

You might just go ahead and thin-slice the meats, and cut the cheese/s into cubes (or thicker slices). It will be much easier on you, and it will look and taste just as good.

One (sort of) proud Jersey girl

More than make me mad, they just make me hungry. Their names sound like the items on an antipasto platter.

I do know people like them — just with less ego and more inhibitions, less idiocy and more familiarity with, say, books.

They had nicknames, too: "El," "Bah-Stah," "Hahms," "Swill" and "Gay." But they didn't "tan," they went to Dead shows, and drank a lot of milk.

I'm not alone in concluding that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em — and then take a nice long shower.

Actress Alyssa Milano transformed herself into a burnt-orange, top- and bottom-boosted cast member for a "Funny or Die" video that made her feelings clear.

I went online to the "Jersey Shore Nickname Generator" where "you can turn your normal name into one that makes you sound like a douche!"

I entered my name, clicked on "female," and hit the "Fist Bump" button. My Jersey Shore nickname? "Last Call." Classy.

Get some fresh beets from your grocer -- yellow ones work great. (Yes, they come in decorator colors besides the popular crimson shade.) Trim the stems, and peel several globes. Then slice into thin circles (a "mandolin" food slicer makes this job easy.) Spread onto cookie sheets. (Silicon "Silpat" nonstick sheet liners keep them from sticking, but you can also use a light spray of cooking oil.) Bake at 350-degrees for 15-20 minutes; turn once until crisp and golden brown. (HINT: Cover with another pan to keep beet chips flat if you're going to top with chevre and herbs.)
