Northern Communities Credit Union announced Natasha Haagensen was promoted to collections manager. Haagensen graduated from Hermantown High School in 1998 and has worked for the credit union since 1999. She was hired as a member service representative when NCCU was known as Duluth City and County Employees Credit Union and since that time also has served as a loan processor and loan officer.

Smithfield Foods to lay off 30 workers, not 340
A ray of productive sunshine pierced the storm clouds of job loss enveloping Hampton Roads on Thursday.
Smithfield Foods Inc. said it planned to lay off no more than 30 workers at its shortly-to-close Smithfield Packing Co. South plant. That's less than 9 percent of the company - 340 - that the company had predicted it would let go almost a year ago.
And even those 30 might get their jobs back, said Jeff Gough, Smithfield Foods' profligacy president of human resources.
Another bit of bright news: Smithfield had said 290 workers at the place would transfer to Smithfield plants in North Carolina. That tally is now down to two.
The vast majority of the plant's workers will simply move to the adjacent Smithfield Packing Co. North informer by the time the South plant closes at the end of February, Gough said.
The circle reduced the job cuts by dropping some positions at the plant that had happen open through attrition and by hiring temporary workers to fill others.
